Professional marketers have the skills to carry out comprehensive marketing programs for businesses and governments, and manage change. Professional skills are encouraged through university or college education, professional development, and workplace experience. A Professional Member of the Institute may also hold the title of Fellow (FCInst.M) and Registered Professional Marketer (RPM). An Honourary Member may be a retired Professional member of the Institute. A Professional Member may also hold the title of Registered Professional Marketer, after appointment by Council.

There are eight classes of membership in the institute. These are:

Fellow
  1. Ten years of membership in good standing (exception rule in place).
  2. Vote of College of Fellows, Past Presidents and Board based on nomination and application and review.
  3. Membership based on leadership, knowledge, experience and sustained membership.

Honourary
  1. A retired member of at least 15 years membership in The Canadian Institute of Marketing/ L’institut canadien du marketing who no longer wishes to be a voting member.
  2. An official of a like-minded marketing institute recommended by Council upon application for Honourary status, or upon recommendation by an officer of the institute followed by an application and approval by Council.
  3. A dignitary recommended by Council upon application for Honourary status, or upon recommendation by an officer of the institute followed by an application and approval by Council.

Registered Professional Marketer (RPM)
  1. Professional Member of the Canadian Institute of Marketing.
  2. Written case study confirming competency, and understanding of the Institute’s Code of Professional Ethics.
  3. Payment of Registration Fee to the Canadian Institute of Marketing for Certificate of Registration and Professional Seal.

Professional Member (MCInst.M)
  1. Experience - five years in a marketing position, the last two at a senior management level. Senior experience qualifications include college and university heads of departments, and full-time lecturers in marketing with five years business or consulting experience
  2. Academic - any of the following:
    1. A diploma of an Institute of Marketing.
    2. BA, MA or PhD with marketing specialization.
    3. Diploma or university post-graduate diploma in Management Studies or Business Administration with marketing specialization
    4. Other educational or professional qualification with marketing input approved by The Canadian Institute of Marketing or one of its affiliated institutes overseas

Associate Member (ACInst.M)

  1. Experience - Three years in a marketing position, the last at some level of management. Qualifications include Sales Training Managers; Area, Divisional or Assistant Managers of Marketing and/or Sales and similar marketing experience. Also qualified are full time lecturers in marketing at a college or university with three years business or consulting experience.
  2. Academic - any of the following:
    1. Certificate from an Institute of Marketing.
    2. BA or MA in a business related subject with a marketing component.
    3. Diploma or university post-graduate diploma in Business Administration of Management Studies.
    4. Other educational or professional qualifications approved by The Canadian Institute of Marketing of one of its affiliated institutes overseas

Graduate Member (GCInst.M)
Degree from an accredited college or university in Management Studies, Business Administration or other course with marketing specialization.

Student Member
A second term student registered in and attending an accredited college or university with a marketing program.

Affiliate Membership
An individual or corporation interested in participation in the institute's activity and contact with members, but having no interest in professional designation
